VMWare/ESX/vSphere 6.5 – Network Disconnect with DELL R730 Servers Having vLAN Tagging…!!!

In environment I have 13 hosts Dell R730 and R630 Dell Blade Servers. I recently upgraded Dell R730 servers with the Dell customized ESXi ISO “VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.5.0.update01-7388607.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized-A07.iso” When the hosts finish upgrading, and exist the maintenance mode, Alert start appearing on the host related to network disconnection issues..When I started looking and the errors, and match it with the Physical Network Adapters; few googles and I came across VMWare KB about this issue and its related to the vLAN Tagging. I made a test by removing one VMNIC and created another temp vSwitch and VM Network PortGroup without vLAN Tagging and it stays UP at all the time.

The case of the group which causing both pNICs goes up and down is the Broadcom NetXtreme BCM57810 10G

Resolution;

By removing the network driver bnx2x from the ESXi host and reboot the host, the network becomes stable;

VM [VM Name] has either VMware vSphere Update Manager or VMware vCenter Server installed. This VM will be ignored for scan and remediation

You are getting the below error when you are trying to upgrade the vCenter Hardware version 13… This is an expected error, because the vCenter cannot update itself outside the box of vSphere infrastructure.

VM [VM Name] has either VMware vSphere Update Manager or VMware vCenter Server installed.  This VM will be ignored for scan and remediation

Resolution:

Shutdown the vCenter, log into the ESX host where the vCenter is hosted and initiate the Hardware Upgrade.

The operation is not supported on the selected inventory Objects. Check the events for the objects selected

If you get the error “The operation is not supported on the selected inventory objects. Check the events for the objects selected for the operation” when you try to remediate a host you will also find the following entry in the eventlogs:

Cause:

  • The host is part of VMWare HA.
  • The host is part of DRS Cluster
  • The host is enabled with Admission Control.

Resolution:

  • Disable all of the above services
  • Scan the host for Updates.
  • Remediate the host again and the Remediate entity should do its job.

Software or system configuration of host hostname is incompatible. ESX5.5 to ESX6.5.

When using vSphere Update Manager to upgrade an ESXi 5.x host, the remediation fails with the error:

Software or system configuration of host hostname is incompatible. Check scan results for details.

Cause:

If you look at the Update Manager, Status Details, you might find a conflicting VIBs;

The upgrade contains the following set of conflicting VIBs:
HUAWEI_bootbank_hio_2.0.0.42-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820
HUAWEI_bootbank_hio_2.0.0.42-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820

Remove the conflicting VIBs or use Image Builder to create a custom upgrade ISO image that contains the newer versions of the conflicting VIBs, and try to upgrade again.

Resolution:

Remove the conflicting VIBs, and reboot your host. Scan again for Updates and the Compliance Status should changed from Incompatible to Non-Compliance.

Dell vWorkspace 8.5 review

Marius Sandbu - IT blog

A cool year so far to be working in IT! alot of new tech been released and I have a lot of catching up to do. One of this is vWorkspace 8.5 which was released a couple of weeks ago.

For those that aren’t aware of what it is, can read some of my previous posts regarding vWorkspace or see a bit from this Dell FAQ: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/virtualization/vworkspace/b/vworkspace-blog/archive/2014/12/09/latest-release-of-vworkspace-8-5-faq-39-s

http://msandbu.wordpress.com/2014/04/20/introduction-to-dell-vworkspace/

Now vWorkspace has been an underdog to the other competition like Vmware View and Citrix XenDesktop, but with this release they have removed some of the gap that the competition might have.

So what’s included and what’s new in this release?

* Foglight for virtualization
Foglight is a monitoring tool which allows us to monitor our entire virtual infrastructure even if it us running on Vmware or Hyper-V

Permalink til innebygd bilde it also has a good integration directly to vWorkspace which allows us to drill…

Dell vWorkspace EOP–Configuration

vWorkspace administrators must read .

Marius Sandbu - IT blog

For those who do not know what vWorkspace is, take a look at my previous blogpost regarding vWorkspace –> http://msandbu.wordpress.com/2014/04/20/introduction-to-dell-vworkspace/

EOP (Enhanced Optimized Protocol) is an enhancement to the RDP protocol which Dell (or Quest) have developed which is a part of vWorkspace. Now Microsoft has made alot of improvements to the RDP procotol in 2012 and 2012 R2, but it is nowhere near Citrix in how it performs over WAN and the ability to deliver high-graphic content. EOP contains mulitple enhancements to the procotol to even the difference, like:

EOP Xtream. Accelerates RDP and EOP traffic on wide area networks (WANs). This provides for an improved user experience by providing faster RDP screen responses and improved performance of all EOP features.

EOP Print. A single-driver printing solution that satisfies both client-side and network printing needs in a vWorkspace environment.

EOP Audio. Enables support for applications that require the…
